We recently spoke to Alan Gotto about how AI is reshaping consultancy procurement and his message was clear: this isn’t just another wave of innovation. It’s a fundamental shift.

With years of experience in consultancy procurement, you think you’ve seen it all,” he explained. “We’ve had blockchain, big data, all promising to change the way we buy consultancy. But nothing has moved as fast, or as meaningfully, as AI is right now.

What makes this moment different is not just the technology itself, but the speed at which it’s changing expectations, both from buyers and providers.

As highlighted in the Financial Times, firms such as PwC are already adapting rapidly. The implication is clear: there will be less space for consultants, and procurement professionals, who fail to embrace AI.

We all have the work of many to do,Alan added. If AI can take on part of that load, why wouldn’t we use it? The opportunity is to move from managing process to managing outcomes.

For procurement leaders responsible for consultancy spend, the risk is becoming what Alan describes as “a digital buyer in an AI age” operating with outdated approaches in a rapidly evolving market.
